MMORPG.com recently kicked off the voting for their 2008 Reader's Choice Awards by asking their readers which of the six news stories nominated by MMORPG editors was the biggest in 2008. Much to our delight, Cryptic Studios’ Star Trek Online was nominated as one of the “Biggest News Stories of the Year”. We are very excited to be included in this year’s awards and would like to ask our community to help show their support by voting for us in this category.

Please vote here at MMORPG.com. (http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/loadFeature/2479) You must be a registered member at MMORPG.com to vote. However, registration is free.

Awesome. Apart from Fallout 3, this is the game I anticipated most in years :D I'm definitely voting.

Right on!:)

I have to admit, Star Trek Online gets my vote.

Although I love several other games, this game is a long awaited piece of our cultural pie and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

I can't wait for your game!

Thanks for taking this challenge into your hands!

I don't need any Blood Wine or Gahk to induce me to vote for this...Romulan Ale will suffice! :D

As much as I hate to say it I believe STO has no chance here. I mean the Blizzard Activision thing was pretty huge too plus it's probably got half the WoW people voting for them.

Shh. I'm thinking Tabula Rasa should actually win in terms of how newsworthy it was. STO appeals mostly to us that are going to vote for it. But yeah, you might be right. Blizzard has an unfair advantage in number bias.

Sorry Cryptic, but at this time STO is still vaporware to me. It's fun to chat about once in a while and maybe re-watch the trailer every couple of months. But we are well into the 21st century and for such a large project to have PR consisting of a forum, a few screenshots every 6 weeks, and "The game is expected to enter public beta testing in 2006 and to launch by early 2007" is not inspiring of trust.

we can play this game smart. the enemy may not even see us coming. rally friends, worriers, comrades. besides if numbers are all we need then lets us make them think we are bigger and more powerful then they could ever be. we need to enact the same plan that Riker did when fighting Picard and the enterprise or when Janeway was fighting the Kazon in "basics". so if numbers are what we need then numbers are what they will get. pick up some hologram emitters(hotmail accounts) and make them think we number in the millions(by flooding the vote box). they are no match for ST tactics. lol

Easily the best news story, especially given all the drama from perpetual beforehand, and now Cryptic acting as our saviours.

I don't know....we've only got 24 posts in here, counting this one, and Razor's. And that's not all unique posters. Even if it were, 24 votes probably aren't gonna make all that much of a difference in that poll, especially against WoW's friggin' huge base. And don't forget, the people on this board are most likely the only ones who even heard about ST:O, let alone care about it. I'm surprised more people haven't seen this thread and done anything. If we're even gonna have a chance, I suggest we bump this to get more people to participate.

Star Trek Online is by far the winner for me. I have been waiting a long time and was sooo happy to see Cryptic emerge with Star Trek Online from Perpetual's ashes.

However, that is some stiff competition. Unless we get enough votes to drown those others out, I think the Blizzard/Activision shocker might get the win. Star Wars The Old Republic was also a pretty big deal that no one (and everyone) saw coming.

You're blaming Cryptic for beta and release announcements that Perpetual Entertainment couldn't meet? They are two completely different companies and two completely different STO projects. This STO that Cryptic is working on has absolutely nothing to do with PE's STO project so please don't confuse the two.

As for the concerns about Blizzard taking the prize away from Cryptic I wouldn't be so sure. As a long time MMORPG.com member I can tell you that the community over there is very anti-WoW. Most view WoW's impact on the MMO industry as a very negative influence as they blame it for all that is wrong with MMO's today. I personally think that Cryptic has a strong chance of winning.

As for voting for STO I did that the day the poll went up long before this announcement.

These are still the current beta and release schedule on the Star Trek website. This can't be ignored. There is no one to blame. I just don't believe STO has moved beyond the trailer.

Well, even given what you said about anti-WoW sentiment (which is nice to hear, by the way. Glad at least some communites on the Internet have taste and common sense.), that helps the STO cause, but I still believe it won't be ranked as the highest newsworthy announcement. To me, Tabula Rasa closing would have been bigger than Blizzard/Activision if it wasn't for the sheer numbers of players for each company. So if you cancel out their chance to win, I'm guessing it's going to go to TR.

Why? Just because you haven't seen any gameplay besides the trailer? It's not like they're going to show us each and every little step of progress since then. It's at the discretion of Cryptic to let us know how far they are in the game whenever they feel like it, if at all. Don't assume absence of evidence implies absence of progress (If you're reading this, sorry for paraphrasing you, Illithi :D)

Again this is a source that Cryptic has no direct control over and has nothing to do with this project. Hell that site hasn't been updated as far as STO is concerned since about 2005. They didn't even update it for PE and are continuing to ignore Cryptic in the same way. StarTrek.com is the absolute last place anyone should go for info on this game, period.

Having no control over the Star Trek website tells me there is a bad relationship with the franchise.

It was a valid assumption when PE was involved. I'm still sad about that. Shouldn't we expect more out of Cryptic?

No, it's just a very poorly run website and has been for some time now. Cryptic's relationship with the IP owners is just fine or they wouldn't have the rights to make the game in the first place. You read too much into these things.

PE and Cryptic are two vastly different companies. Any layman could figure that out just by comparing both the amount and quality of information the two released on their respective versions of the game. Don't hold PE's failure against Cryptic, as it's in no way their fault. And really, you should probably get over Perpetual dropping the ball, period. I don't see why you're stil sad about. The game got picked up again and seems to be further along than it was in PE's hands. It's not like we're still wondering about whether it has a future again.

I try to put myself in their shoes. If I'm the owner of Star Trek and I think Cryptic is doing a good job, then I'm going to say, please come to my official website and promote this wonderful product. There's no effort involved. It is a common-sense component of the relationship, and it's not happening.

unless you are greedy then you would say....we have the ear of the star trek community and our contract is up with you. if you want us to place an ad on our website you have to pay X amount of money. Cryptic then may say well that is way to much money. we were hoping to only pay Y amount. now then Y < X so the website guy says well i want X and no less. so then Cryptic says i am sorry but we can't pay you that. then the site says well then you will have to do this without the support of the star trek website and then just never changed the info on the site. that or the ST website is run by monkeys stuck in a time loop lol. i am sure Cryptic doesn't run every little idea about the game by the ST website guys. if there is bad blood between Cryptic and them....it isn't because of the game. no one but cryptic even knows what the end product is really going to look like and play like, and they aren't going to tell anyone till they are ready to sell the game. we could see the newest game changer for mmos or a flop....it could be somewhere in between. what ever happens....don't judge the company or game on the fact that a website doesn't have an ad or an update for the game.
