Hey. I just join this forum about 5 minutes ago. I'm not completely ignorant to this game. I followed it like it was a religion back when it was still being developed by Perpetual Entertainment. After they stopped, I stopped. I thought it was dead, until a week ago when I found this site.
Anyway, what I'm asking is for a little bit of an overview of the game. I've been reading everything on the site, but a lot has changed since i stopped following this. For one there is an actual trailer and more the 2 screen shots. While I'm looking for general info, I'm also looking at one specific thing. Now I know the FAQ say nothing has been decided yet about an online fee, but has anyone heard anything? Whether or not there is a fee will determine whether or not I get this game. never going to pay for on MMO again after the crap I payed for on SWG.
Also looking for info about character naming. Will it be weird names? Or will people be able to name their player John for example, and if so how will this affect other people naming their character John (using a different surname of course)
if your still reading then I thank you. Good to be back on top of STO.

I think that Cryptic's other games are pay to play.
there really isn't any info on naming a toon, yet.

Well for me it's really down to STO or the new Star Wars MMO. Like I said, online fee will decide for me.

You'll probably have to pay for both......just a guess.

Probably. Although with the Star Wars one, people are not going to want to pay for it, after SWG. Biggest waste of $15 bucks a month ever. I guess I'll just wait and see.

Lots of information can be gotten from the FAQ and the "Ask Crytpic" threads in the news section.
Also take everything you knew from when perpetual was doing it and wipe it from your mind. Nothing (almost) was done and even less was saved.

Whether they want to or not is irrelevent.
And there will be a fee for this game. It will be in the 14-15 dollar range because that is what the standard is right now.

Both os the game will have an online fee

You guys are probably right about online fees. I'll wait and see what happens. If STO looks good at release then maybe i'll pay it. Not sure yet.
Thanks again for the replies.

First of all, welcome back to the Star Trek Online community! I also don't think there is any question as to whether or not there will be a fee to play the game, but I don't mind paying to play Star Trek Online since I know that part of the money I spend will be going towards new content that I will hopefully be able to enjoy at some point.

We still have to see if the product will worth the price. For me depends on the inmersion, true to canon and role-play capacity.

:D
I mean seriously....oh and welcome back to STO.

I'm sure 15 dollers a month is differant to all of us.To some it's nothing, and i'm sure to others it's a budgeted expense. But in almost all MMO's you pay to play....Keeps the servers up,pays for matanance, and expansions....So whatever it takes to keep the game good...I'll try and do...;)

Also newbie to online star trek, but not to star trek universe. I was wondering if they will let people from outside U.S.A. to play. (Europe - Romania, for example)

I'm sure they will! It is the Internet, after all. :D
I would think it's just a matter of if they do a simultaneous worldwide release or released at different dates in different regions.

That's my feelings. I love Star trek, but if I'm going to pay $15 a month to play, I want a good game. Role Play is all I really ever did in SWG.
STO looks good, but so does Star Wars: The Old Republic. I'll just wait and see which looks better and go form there.

Just to suggest something here... there are very few MMO's that are free to play. Even fewer that have been produced by a company like Cryptic.
Now like it has been said, nothing has been "decided" or rather announced yet, but MMO's require a great deal of money to produce, maintain and update and so far there has been little to know evidence that "alternative methods of funding are viable.

Well hopefully they'll offer a free trial like WoW and EVE and you can get a taste of the game to see if it's for you or not. Same for SW:KotOR MMO I hope.

.
most MMO's now dont do free trials for a game at start more like 2-3 mounts after so the people that did pay for the game would not have to worry about people in the quest spots so much an the Lag as will.

I can assure you that both games, (STO and the New Starwars) are going to be pay to play. Most certain there both going to have a free trial period. How this free trial period will be, is uncertain.
As for the prices, It will most likely be a standard mmo price. 15 dollars in the usa, 12.99 euro in europe.(euros pay more due to taxes and simply being used).
Wether the game will be worth it, so far i would say yes, but only time will tell that. Counts for both games actually.

I'm here to give confidence to the `people who know nothing about Star Trek and really looking forward to this game`, as I know very (very) little about Star Trek in general, BUT after keeping in-tact with this board & the news from STO, $15 a month is looking very nice at the moment :)

Thanks again everyone for your replies.
Since both STO and SW:TOR will be pay to play, I'll just get which ever one looks better. Right now that is Star Wars. Looks better for role playing (only thing I really do) and looks better in story.

The last thing I read was that they were still considering pricing, but I believe Raldar's estimates to be correct.
