... not war - will that be possible in STO? Do you have to fight or will you be able to create a character who doesn't spend a second in combat during his or her entire lifespan? Crafting, Fleet Starbase Maintenance, creating new weapons for other Guild members from salvanged ship parts that people bring you?
I'm a fighter - I love blowing stuff up! But I know a few people who are interested in aspects other then combat. Will STO have these, or will 99% of the game be space combat/away mission combat?

considering kilngons dont take prisoners, it would be difficult to aviod combat all together. You could turn the "other nacelle" as it were and be desroyed, or you could try and run. But, if there is one lesson that ST has shown us over the last 40 years, space exploration is inherently dangerous, and you wont survive if you dont defend your self.
keep this in mind, cryptic has said there will be diplomatic solutions available to players, not knowing weather this will be available in all situations, i suppose you could attempt to talk your way out of conflict.

We can't make love, i could just imagine all those soccer moms crying about 'hot raktajino' if we could. so no kirk style diplomacy! :p
I doubt you'll be able to completely negate combat, but i'd hope you can minimise it if that's your wish. For instance staying out of the neutral zone would likely be a good start.
Personally i'd enjoy something where combat is threatened but you can do something to avert it. So you could attempt to avert it by various means but if you fail, it's red alert time.

Station youself on a science vessel, or make yourself the resident ship-builder of a Fleet. I have a feeling that it will be difficult to 100% avoid combat, but, as said above, you could probably avoid it alot if you try really hard.
(I will not be avoiding combat, nor do I endorse anyone who avoids combat :D)

If we command a medical ship and are answering a distress call from NPC's or PC's, will errands of mercy be recognized by enemies or will medical ships be just as much a target as any other ship?
I don't know if this should be a thread of its own or if it would fall under this thread.
I am interested in having a science ship or medical ship and would be interested in know if I'll end up like the USS Pasteur or not ;)

"War is good for business" 34th Rule of acquisition or was it the 35th rule of acquisition. I always forget:p.

Various diplomatic solutions would be pretty cool for various missions. There has been several times where Picard for example talked himself out of a fight either by outwitting the other person or via diplomacy.
Versus another player....I don't think they would be as forgiving as the AI.
If you want to avoid combat, I say wait for the expansion and serve the Romulan Star Empire. We provid all the comforts of the Federation and none of that silly Klingon Pride. If your interested, just sign here on the dotted line

You get a sign on bonus and a keg of Romulan ale as well;)

I'd probably take an escort with you, if you were going to be on a "mission of mercy" in a particularly unstable region. Klingons and Cardassians won't be too keen to admit weakness.

Well you can always do low risk exploration missions. You know maping out new areas of space, that will send others into the void to do the 1st contants and stuff like that. :D

id be carefull with exploration too. just because your exploring doesnt make it safe. you might wander into a hostile factions space, or anger someone accidently. if you want safe, i would stay in federation space.

one of our mandates is to protect the ones who need it, so that means you. remember us when the game comes out, we'll help ya out. :)

The way they are planning the mission system there will be many ways to complete a mission.....Many times I think you will be able to play the pacifist, but sometimes Nothing works better than Phase Rifle Diplomacy.
I seem to remember Scotty saying something about Diplomacy and a loaded Phaser bank…..

They don't? I think there are many events that say they do including a feature film of it :p

I think that combat will be a player's only option in some extreme circumstances, but I hope that there are many times when players can take their own course of action, whether it is choosing to enter a conflict or not.
