We don't have clear details yet about what races will be available to each faction. It's obvious with some, such as Klingons in the Klingon faction, and humans in the Federation faction. Beyond we have to make assumptions.
One thing we know, is that we will be able to choose a faction, Federation or Klingon, and create a customized alien using facial elements from the established races and other new elements. So it may be possible to choose the Klingon faction, then (instead of choosing the Klingon race) choose to create a custom alien race (and then instead of making it look all green or blue with facial bumps or ridges etc etc, just make it look human).
One thing I've wondered about is if it would be possible to make a Klingon character that looks like the Klingons from TOS. (I don't personally want to play as one, I'd prefer to look closer to Worf and Gowron, but it would be interesting to see some TOS Klingons in the mix).
There's another 6 page thread floating around called The New Klingon Empire (http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=246872#post246872) which addresses the fact that Cryptic will be adding other non-Klingon races to the Klingon Faction. So we will be seeing Orions, Gorns, and possibly other established races in command of a Klingon ship.

Well, from what I could discern, there will be six prefab playable races with the option of creating a completely unique race of your own. Logic would dictate that you would be given the option to "pick a side" during character creation. But the alternative would be that the races are halved: e.g. Humans, Vulcans, and Andorians could only be Federation faction while Klingons, Romulans , and Gorns could only be Klingon faction; and player-made species would depend on where you allocate your character points (Logic vs Honor, say).
I dunno, but these seem to be the only scenarios I can envision. ;)

We actually do know what the base races for each factions will be;
Federation = Humans, Tellerites, Vulcans, Andorians, Bajoran and Ferengi
Klingons = Klingon, Gorn, Naussicaan and Orions
No, you can't make a human in the Klingon Empire, or a Klingon in the Federation, directly. However, with the race creator you can probably pull off some facsimiles, such as a half human half-klingon, or a vulcan-klingon, ect.

I knew all those races were in the game but wasn't 100% sure which ones would be exclusive to which side. (There's a concept art pic of a Ferengi serving aboard a Klingon ship.) Were the faction races listed in the Game Informer article? I wasn't able to find a copy of that issue in my local stores so I missed out on that GI STO article. :(
We've also seen a pic of a Federation character that looks Trill. I guess that was just a customized "alien" and not officially a Trill.

Most of those concept images are the old Perpetual concept images. When Cryptic took over STO they got the rights to use the concept artwork, and decided to keep some of them for inspiration or actually use to create the game. As far as the question is concerned, I believe it was an interview that stated that the base races for each faction would be side locked.

If i remember correctly the species named we're only a sampling of what species would be playable (atleast for the starfleet side). so you never know, trill might be a species choice aswell.
Been a while since i read the article, so i could be wrong.

Amen. So some may want to rethink continually intimating that people should already know info that could have only been garnered via that article.

Even if a human cannot really work for the Klingon Empire within the gameplay rules, such a scenario would certainly make for an interesting roleplaying angle - or perhaps even the foundation of some kind of fleet. Great idea!

It's sorta like the take of the Klingon example. You can't have a real klingon in the Federation, but you can use the character creator to make something very similar to a Klingon.
So you should be able to make something close to a human, on the Klingon side.

hmm a vulcan-klingon mix. theres just something about the idea of a klingon without emotions. I imagine this type of mix would cause alot of bi-polar disorders. I can just see a vulcan/klingon saying something like "Violence is the logical and honorable way to resolve this conflict captian." Man I have trouble picturing how exzactly this mix would act but I want one =P

The thing is that Vulcan emotion suppression is not biological or genetic, but a matter of training. So unless this Klingon was raised by Vulcans they probably would not be "without emotions".

i refuse to beleive any races are pre defined
one of the things i hate about most mmo's
is the fact that races are forced to play as pre set factions and proffessions
its essetnially racism and classicism
ive played as a gnome hunter before on world of warcraft
and i spent more time with people being made at me because i could not summon demons
than i did fighting
i would have much rather played as a hunter gnome with the horde then played anything else
but no instead i was subject to forced racism

You can believe or refuse to believe what you like, but really the evidence is in and there will be predefined species.

No way if there is war. And no way cos Klingons usually don' have regular alien crews.

Hey boy this is Star Trek, there is a background, and the game must stay with what the canon TV shows, movies and official books told. If not then wouldn't be able to call it StarTrek Online.
Every race has its atributes and acts its way, and in the show some races don't mix with others and every crew member has its own responsabilities.

First of all, if Star Trek lore demonstrated that any race could be a captain in any fleet then I can see a point to your argument. However, that is not the case. Even in the case of World of Warcraft, there is lore from the RTS games that dictate what races belong to what factions and what classes they can be. Just remember, it's only a game!
Gnomes can't be hunters in World of Warcraft. Go home troll.

Since we don't know those races could be a base to recreate many races from the shows. I mean:
Trill = human with spots (DS9 trill)
Talarian = human with a crest
Romulan = vulcan with no logic :D
and goes on...

Human-Klingon hibrids probably will be the kind of Torres. A klingon less klingon.
A Vulcan-klingon is something imposible, sure would be taken as romulan and killed in a fight. :D
