Cryptic needs to give a 2 month notice as to what the ideal performance needs will be for STO.

That will probably be done when the Beta is announced. ;)

I can give you all some hints that have surfaced.... soon we will need to have some restraint regarding number talk, so let's keep what we do know on the table, but allow the developers the freedom of the last word - all the way up to release.

One of the Cryptic staff has posted that they are running CO on a dual core with an 8800 as her personal computer. That it runs great on that machine.
The posting caused much hub-bub and only furthered the unlikeliness of them saying anything official before the printed box, with the information on it, is on the shelf. Maybe we will get a heads-up, it's not all that rare, but my guess is it won't give you time to plan for it.

People who will be playing Beta however will know well in advance. I recommend that everybody keep your cool when numbers are given for beta recommendations... It will be beta and although it will be likely the same... it might not necessarily. In other words the requirements on the box might not be the same at all. Additionally, releasing information regarding the system requirements too far in advance is detrimental to their strategy. Us knowing will in no way increase sales, and could cripple them with competitors or critics.

So mums the word, but expect this will not run on your eMachine, I know you don't want to believe it, but

1. just take the other current release MMOs,
2. what we seen running at the shows (which definitely would not run on an eMachine)
3. and these little tidbits of info that the developers feed to us.

It's a year down the road, the top of the line cheapo $35 with rebate card will do just fine... currently it's only one step lower than an 8800,
but by then - expect an 8800 level of performance for near nothing.

Oh.... and check out my deal of the day thread in the general topics area, for current bargains on those, like me, who are impoverished gamers.... you may be surprised that we can all still be in the game :D

Personally, I haven't looked at system requirements since the '80s. If you're shopping for a game that will run on minimum sys reqs then chances are your hardware and drivers are so out of date that the game will operate horribly if you can get it to run at all.

LOL this is gold.... We should all know by now that new games basically run the slide show version for those who are trying to play at the "Minimum" level. I always say that those numbers mean "It might actually work"

even playing at "Recommended" typically means that you will get "acceptable" frame rates at a low or medium resolution - maybe.

Well being impoverished myself, I will tell you from experience, that the deals and bargain hunting that we will do, along with xmas shopping (STO release time), xmas budgets, xmas mail problems etc., we will need to know what will run with our current programs, and what we need to save for and start bargain hunting for.

2 months is a general all around good number of months for Cryptic to "let the cat out of the bag" and for the fans to "bargain hunt and possibly save for release date".

I purchased my computer when swg came out. I had paid for the best... only to cry when the game itself sucked. But hey, the computer lives on :)

and I have avenged you !!
I was given a full set of SWG games and the 60 day game card because they were trying to entice me into their brood. But I had not opened the package - I came to my beloved STO forumites and they advised me proper.... I even said I would try it, but that only made the case against me clearer - so now I have relinquished it NIB sealed and shipped - Internet Auction style :p

i suspect that companies have looked towards the sort of faliure of AOC. With its next gen graphics thye lost a massive propotion of the gaming population due to not upgrading.

Hell i was in the process of upgrading but even after building a monster of a machine (well monster in my eyes) i still had to go out and buy 2 new graphics cards and even then it still ran pretty dog like.

Eye candy isnt everything.

Personally I would buy flat shaded polygons with millions of players on screen at once with realistic damage effects and phasers and borg cubes and worf screaming "RAMMING SPEED" with high FPS and a feeling of fun.

Without going "wow that earth is so realistic pitty i cant move in this slideshow of a game".

I think im a bit too old school. flat polygons elite style and im happy bunny :)

Best way to figure out?
Take CO requirements when it get's sold in April and use that. I'm guessing it'll be very similar.

I really hope that the developers release this information as early as possible because I need a new PC but I've been holding out because I want to make sure the new one I get will be optimal for Star Trek Online.
