Yes im new here, so ive been looking around the site and forums and something that's been niggling at the back of my mind.

The posters post as though STO is at the concepts stage only, the Dev's however post as though its beyond that, but are pretty tight lipped.

what i'd dearly like to know is, "how much" of STO has Razor/people at Cryptic "played"?

I get the big sense that theres some justifiable perfectionism going on,

Has anyone on the devs loaded STO up, created a "basic" character, flew a ship around? more maybe?

please for Kahless sake details!!! :D

The only thing the devs have let us in on is the ship to ship, and hand to hand combat part of the game was complete, look for a demonstration of it in the video area, when they first unveiled STO in vegas. That's all to my knowledge.

This game will have a different development cycle and process than many others for one simple reason. They have a pre-made physics engine. So to an extent the answer to your question "Has anyone on the devs loaded STO up..." is yes. This can be seen in the trailer which is all game rendered footage.

On the other hand it is fairly clear that the game is still in a conceptual phase as well because in the FAW many things have "yet to be decided".

Until the game mechanics are ironed out we can't really say that the games is being "play tested"

thats pretty much all to the knowledge of whats going on. otherwise, we are just here to pontificate each other till we can actually phaser each other.

Honestly, when compared to the amount of information that Perpetual Entertainment released when they were developing Star Trek Online, I don't think anyone here can complain much at all with how Cryptic Studios is handling the game.

kudos. people should remember this and the last half decade of star trek mmorpg teases from the gaming industry before we ever demand anything from cryptic.

i think so far, their roll out has been very fan friendly and very user friendly. i'm enjoying it and this forum community for sure.

personally i think the forum here should be expanded more, it is rather basic. after all st fans supposed to be biggest scifi fans but i don't see that on these forums when compared to activity of other scifi game forums.

Got to agree with this to be honest, I was asking what i did in the first post -purely- because of the language used by Cryptic when talking about STO as opposed to actual details released, there's hints STO is quite developed -but- wisely the lid is being kept on how far.

working on custom content for NWN (for example when i did an addon that included 20 new outfits)
doing that one add-on meant, assembling and (occasionally converting) 240 3D model files as well as 120 odd tga texture files, altering a table file so the game could reference them correctly (used a numerical system, one number missed or wrong would produce anything from the wrong part being displayed on the avatar to the models listed after that error not being "available" ingame), took roughly three -days- of painstaking file editing shifting, selection and converting (7 hours a day mind you).

Doing an RPG is a -huge- and complicated task that alot of players can take for granted (being unaware of game development), I -hope- Cryptic are the ones to finally deliver on a long term "promise" from the gaming industry but they've done damn well from the little they're releasing on getting towards that.

Hmmm I hate to compare these games, but this will put it into a better light.

Think of STO to Never Winter Nights.

Cryptic has a working tested engine....and Never Winter Nights engine works and is tested.
Cryptic just needs to use that engine to make the star trek world, just like you could use
the Never Winter Nights game to make your own gaming world.

Cryptic needs to fill in the play area maps and physical content
with NWN, you need to fill in the maps and content.

With cryptic's engine, they have many options in setting up thier world.
With NWN you also have many options.

With cryptics engine, some things are hard to do, a few are impossible.
with NWN, some things are hard to create, some are not available...ect..

In both cases...creating the new game is relatively easy because of what they have
in common....a working tested engine.

almost in every case of 'pipedreams' and 'vaporware'..they have no working engine, it is
80% of the work, getting a working engine.

so, are cryptic developers loading up STO...yup, they are just filling it up with our new
game world, why are still some things still undecided? with thier engine, they have options
and they are trying to figure out the best ones to use.

Hope this helps

Well I can say this much, the dev team already has the hard part done... the engine. So with that said I'm sure most of the dev team has played around with it on some level.

I think all of the skepticism on the status of this game is really warranted, we saw so much in the trailer and read a lot in Game Informer, but that is it. We aren't even seeing any dev logs. For all we know, this game is at complete stand still until Champions finishes up and the Cryptic team shifts its attention back to Star Trek Online. If the creators really want to keep us interested, they should give us something with real substance that will make us say "Damn, I have to play this game. World of Warcraft who? Screw The Old Republic."

Here's a little something from the Game Informer article:

"During out visit, a huge number of art assets were already in place. Space combat was up and working. Whole planets and the ability to run through them were on display. The remarkably extensive race and character creator already produces endless variety."

So they're pretty far along in the process considering they've had the rights to this IP for less than a year!

because your 142 posts shows how disinterested you have become.

i think we should just be patient. if i had a choice of this game being released tomorrow and being pooptastic or in a year and being a great experience, we know which is better.

why bite teh hand that will feed you? i think cryptic can do whatever they want in terms of rollout and keeping us informed. they don't have to answer to us until we are paying customers. so to be frank, lets chill, smoke some veggies if you need to (i mean eating green beans for the kids out there) and just be happy that someone is taking the huge risk of making this game happen.

i for one am so really excited, but my views are tempered. we all want the best for this game, so lets just enjoy the company on the forums and lets see what happens... kay? :)

Except they're two different development teams.

The community/PR team on the other hand is the same for both games, so naturally their attention is going to be pushing Champions first. We will be getting more information, but there's little point over hyping things now when release is almost a year out, they want us really psyched a month out so they can sustain it.

I would like to hear abit more details from Cryptic about the state of game development, something abit more recent nothing "secret" but abit of a progress update.

that said

quite correct jwick
art assests are one of the "big" projects for any game, this is -especially- true of MMORPGs, char generator is another decent sized project to get done even -if- you've a pre-exsisting one to play with, Space combat, well how "easy" that is dev wise depends upon your physics engine it can be reasonably quickly coded compared to a char generator same for terrain movement..

they already have the char generator from champions and coh,x and they already have the space combat system based on the fact that you can fly in coh,x. i think that was in the vid from startrekcon on the main site.

I have a confession to make...

Star Trek Online... is my dream. I used a pipe inside my head to slowly leak it out into the real world as I sleep. I just haven't been getting much sleep lately so that's why you haven't been getting more.

The current dev team has had the project for 4months a previous dev company had the project but apparently decided STO wasn't worth their time. HAhahahahahha

The game will likekly be released in late 2009. I don't think STO will come out before Champions and Cryptic will probably give at least 6 months between Champions release and STO's release, so that those who were about to move on from the Champions game will be more likely to choose STO as the game that they move on to (since the average tmie that a person plays an MMORPG is 6 months). Of course, it could come earlier or later, but I think late 2009 is a very likely timeframe for release. You also have the opportunity to pick up holiday game sales that way and there's winter break that typically allows people to spend more time/money on games, since they aren't being distracted by their studies (and a lot of people that play games are students).

i think all you have to do is figure out when the new trek reboot movie comes out on dvd and/or general release in theatre. release in bunches always seem to be the market way.

While I like many here have be advocates for patience on this forums....please explain how a person's post count has any bearing on their level of interest. Considering many peoples posts are either gibberish and/or they use this forum as a off topic chat room.

Like any forum of this sort how often a person posts does not logically prove their personal level of interest. Anyone can make endless and useless off topic replies...or comment in every possible duplicate thread they see if they like....or do like I do and read, but rarely post. I could argue no one on Earth is an interested in STO as I, but I could never prove it....and posting a lot will not make my case either.

My ears are burning, everyone is talking about my "142 posts."

I'll have you know that:
A. I've surpassed that number now :)
B. I'm quite impatient (particularly in waiting for STO since I have been waiting since before the Perpetual problem)
C. I am very interested in STO and will continue to post on these boards until the game comes out, when I probably will never post on them again :D
