look i understand the need to make things easy.
making space fights limited to a 2D plane does make things easier, but not as tacticly fun.
unfortunatly watching all of startrek there are very few examples of an actuall 3d fighting strategy, the first one being star trek the next generation "All Good Things" where the enterprise-D with the galaxy-X refit decloaked under 2 klingon battleships and riped the first one to shreads with an underslung phaser cannon.
the other refrence is star trek enterprise, lets face it they had to dodge they diddnet have shields. really liked nx-01 vs the nazi's. only in startrek do you get to fight nazi's on primetime television.
back on topic. i played klingon academy alot back in the day, got respect for chang. Rolling is very helpfull, your profile changes and diffrent shields come into play. a little kobyashi maru action wouldent hurt either. the other thing is in most star trek games and tv shows ships get some sort of cool feature thats pretty much designed to make the ship more than a singal phaser beam and torpedo launcher. AMFP, tachyon beam, poleron burst, hell the deflector dish on fed ships can do just about anything, from warp cannon to planet atmospher detox-o-matic. even specality torpedos, who here wants the tri-cobalt? (for the longest time i thought they were saying trycoval torpedoes, stupid youth) or thoes interphase plasma torps from bridge commander?
i never did understand why they never made a ship with a large number of torpedo launchers as a primary armrament. think of a galaxy class saucer section. think how many torpedo launchers you could put in if you riped out every bit of crew quarters and science labs. it be the juggernaut. the federation does need a huge warship, every time they make a new one its more streamlined and shrinkable than the last. hell the last big new ship thy made splits into 3 smaller ships.
