I realize that nowadays red is the command color, an sending these guys in as connon fodder makes no sense.
I'm not a hard core trekkie, so i'm just wondering if someone could explain it a little

I think that "redshirts" is just one of the terms that has caught on with Star Trek fans since it is sort of an iconic part of the original Star Trek series, and I think it would be neat to see some hidden references to it in the game since most people would understand what the significance of the term.

In the original series gold was the command colour and red was security and ship services, like engineering, unlike now where it was reversed.
In TOS security bieng red, they would often go down to a planet and get killed, hence the redshirt reference ( which is not a good one ) lol
And since you could'nt kill off a major character in the show the redshirt always died.

Red Shirts in early Star Trek - Represented security personnel
Red Shirts in late Star Trek & STO - Represent command. Much like, you would refer to high-ranking military officers as 'brass'.
Idea: Early ST Red Shirts could simply be compared to Red Coats?

:D Not as many people die in the new Treks, but it's almost always a gold shirt (the equivalent of a red after the color reverse)

Redshirts in general stand around pressing one button over and over in a desperate attempt to convince themselves that their lives aren't futile.

Actually the only reason they changed the "red shirt / gold shirt" thing around back when ST:TNG first started was that the producers of the show realized that there was the ST:TOS Red Shirt joke going around and they simply wanted to try to put an end to it by switching the colors. :)

Actually in TNG redshirts were still the ones who got killed on missions, or simply sitting at the conn.

On the show LOST surviving passengers that can be killed off are also referred to as "Redshirts" in homage to the TOS Tradition.
I like the Galaxy Quest homage to the redshirts. When they are about to land on the alien planet Guy who played crewman #6 in an episode and was killed realizes he is the only person on the shuttle that doesn't have a name and beginsd to Spaz out. The Tony Shaloub(love that Monk) character tells him, "Relax, maybe youre the plucky comic relief."

this will explain it for everyone expendability (http://www.chromecaraccessories.co.uk/lg_images/news/star-trek-expendability.jpg)
and the term red shirt has grown much beyond purely a startrek referance, it has been used in music and other television and is now a pop referance. yet another example of how this little show of Gene's has influenced the world.

If you give a redshirt any kind of task, no matter how safe or simple it may seem, they will die.
There is no way for a redshirt to avoid it's fate, they are the Star Trek equivalant of lemmings.
All a redshirt can hope for in life is to die in a reasonably heroic fashion, rather than say being shot by a plant.

Notice how the only three main characters that did alot of fighting (Tasha Yarr, Worf & Data) were all wearing Yellow shirts. But I can't remember, was Yarr wearing yellow when she died? They should've switched her to red for just that episode. Or had a funeral service with her dressed in red or something.

redshirts are one of the ways kirk scores with the ladys, he stands next to a hot babe, redshirt runs into a mine field or somthing, gets killed, and the woman leaps into his arms.

Red Shirts means extras named Guy A falls on Spike B, or Guy B slips on Bath Soap A and breaks his neck in the shower - while wearing a red shirt. Catch my drift?

Did I say TNG redshirts -never- got killed? No, didn't think so.
Anyway you do of course remember what color Tasha Yar was wearing when she died? ;)
My point was that the makers of TNG did their best to stop the silly joke that ONLY redshirts were killed. Part of that effort was switching the red/gold colors. Basically in Trek since TNG if you were part of an away team and weren't one of the main cast you were at least likely to die no matter what color shirt you wore.
Other sci-fi shows have since carried the joke to its extreme limits.
For instance in Lexx if you were anyone besides the main cast you were almost guaranteed to die by the end of the show.
That even included entire planets much of the time. ;)
