I'm surprised that http://www.mmorpg.com/index.cfm website doesnt even list startrekonline as one of the most popular or best voted. But yet KOTR mmo that just got announced just a short time ago is already the most popular mmo on there site. Whats up with that??? I would think star wars would be about the same popularity as star trek ? Any thoughts ?

Star Wars will always be a step ahead of Trek. It's a rule. I don't know why, but it's just that way.

Someone slaps Star Wars on a game, and people will love it, even if they haven't even played the game.

Very simple really. The death of the previous Trek game has jaded some people to the potential. I personally think Cryptic is doing a fantastic job with everything we've heard so far, but many a hardcore fan (some of whom troll here) are feel disenfranchised by the mistakes of Perpetual Ent.

While Ver-go-a-go-go makes a valid point (SW is flat out more popular) I get a feeling that STO is going to be a sleeper until it is closer to launch.

The Knights of the Old Republic games have always been some of the most amazing RPGs in terms of storytelling, so the very notion of a MMORPG coming out rises A TON of hype. Star Trek Online has the exact opposite going, most Star Trek games so far have been cheap clones of real games and the 'first' STO got killed off and turned over to a different company.

And while Cryptik is an amazing company, such things do kill enthusiasm quite a bit.

In my opinion It's because Star Wars is more for kids. George Lucas himself has said he wanted the new movies to be something even his children could enjoy. Star Trek is more for people who like to think, and not just use the force for everything. ST has a more intellectual feel to It. Kids see lightsabers and go "OMG OMG I gotta have It!"

just look at the age poll posted in another thread.... seems the avg age so far on here is probably late 20's to early 30's where star wars appeals to a much younger crowd especially after the new movies and cartoons were released....not to mention the sheer numbers of star wars based games of various types released in the last few yrs alone along with toys guarantees a larger following among kids and younger teens

STO is on that site. Thou KOTOR is listed as fantasy while Galaxy is Sci-fi.

I like both IPs a lot but Star Trek was first so that's where my loyalty is although I will probably play both games when they come out.

I definitely think that the failure of the previous incarnation of Star Trek Online is affecting the game's popularity at the moment, but I think that eventually people will mostly forget about Perpetual Entertainment's version of Star Trek Online.

You know... If the system is close to the KotOR system, it really will be one of the best and most popular games out there. Just saying...
