Wouldn't it be safe to say that since you can get different ships in the game that every one would have a different name or will one name be carried with you from ship assignment to ship assignment?

II'm thinking that the different ships will have different names. You don't generally transfer to a new ship and it has the same name as your old one. A new class of ship would probably have a different name and ID number. My 2 cents, for what its worth.

Agreed. Different ships always have different names, or if they don't, then they are many years apart. The exception, of course, is the Enterprises (NX-01 - 1701-J), but those aren't the norm.

Or if a ship is prematurely destroyed as with the Enterprise - A

This is why naming your own ship would be disastrous. I know that Cryptic wants to make everything customizable, but the name situation would present many problems. Also, it would be great to have each ship with it's own name and history about it. Once you get a major modification done, then you could re-name the ship (as a possible solution, but it still presents problems), but still.......

if you think about it the enterprise was a different ship each and every time a-b-c-d-e and so on so its reasonable to think you could keep the same name for your ships

this is where realism gets in the way of fun. i am of the position that if its my ship, i name it whatever i want, from anything to 'toot' to 'sexy chocolate'. if this isn't allowed, it would be sad. if people want real names like the 'USS Louisville', more power to them, but if i want to name it 'mister sinister', why not?
equality brother. it comes in all packages...

OK, see, this reminds me of all the days I've spent running around WoW and seeing names like "Deuch***" or "Ididyourmama" or something equally retarded/obnoxious. Because Cryptic is trying to make the game very similar to Star Trek, it's really a question of canon, and ships in Star Trek are not called "USS Deuch***" or "USS Ididyourmama" (or "USS Sexy Chocalate").

I was pointing out how naming your own ship will cause big problems, such as 4 or 5 ships named "Posidon" for example. Also, each ship has a unique history about it. Once you take command of that ship for a while, you add the history to it. When you transfer to a new ship, that new ship has a different history as well, and the ship you pass on will have the history you added to it. Also, naming a ship "Fluffy Bunny" or as you say "Mister Sinister" does not follow canon practice by the Federation. This too presents many problems.

I remember in another thread a person had the suggestion that the ship name would only visible to the player...this would alllow us to have the flexibility to name our own ship any name we want and we would see it in game but everyone else would just see basic ship information on our ship when we encounter each other. For example: Federation New Orleans class Frigate or Klingon B'rel class Bird of Prey...
Perhaps if you click on a ship it would popup more detailed information on the ship that would include ship name, and captain name.....to assist in locating the player you wanted to find.
I hope Cryptic does not require ship name or captain name to be unique for the game and uses another authentication metihod to let the system identify the player.

I think that you should be able to name your own ship. i dont want to buy a new ship and have it come with some name that a cant even pronounce or type without checking the spelling thirteen times. As long as there are restrictions to the names you see dont see anything to immature, i dont mind.
But if there are going to be serious restrictions to the name, i think it would be best for you to pick a ship name early on and every time you buy a new ship, it comes with the same name, but with a corresponding letter, like enterprise A,B,C etc.

freedom baby, you gotta deal.
i respect canon as much as anyone on the forums, like the poster after you suggests that its a canon issue, but i want to name my ship. therefore, everyone else can name their ship whatever they want to. simple.
and obviously, i'm sure there will be a system in place where you can't use swear words in your name or make multiple names, like teh character naming system, so that solves the twenty 'upyourspunk' names or whatever.
like i said...

Im kind of in the middle of the spectrum of names, id love to use the same name as my 1st ship if i could. and add a letter to the other type ships. id also like to be able to use a different name if i wanted.

I hope that ship names are unique so that they cannot be taken by other players; that being said, I think that players should be given the option to keep their ship name even as they acquire new ship classes.

In my opinion players should be able to select from a large pool of ship names and even suggest new names but self-naming should be subject to content and availability checks. Do you want five people running around in the "USS *****" or "USS Breast" (I'm being relatively polite)? I certainly don't but on the other hand I do appreciate people want to name their own stuff and as such a content and availability check system would be suitable.

OK. I guess I can see that. Still...
Actually, I kind of like what the guy above me suggested.

We'll be playing the "captain" of a ship they ships are owned by Star Fleet
never has a captain named his own ship unless he stole it as James Kirk did,
I feel ship Names and Reg Numbers should be handled by Star Fleet, would save us seeing a lot of USS BiteMe's out there

what about just a registry number on the hull, and then the player gets to name it. plus, in a one server systm, your gonna have repetitive names. I actually would love to pick my own registry number, but w/e

as much as i would like to name my own ship ( i already have a text file with 20 names on it) i am hoping cryptic has a name generator and doesnt allow for duplicates. maybe you ships name could be reused ONLY atfer its destruction.
i dont want to see 6000 enterprises, or even worse , just 1 HAX0R or L33T.
so as much as i would like to name my own ship, i am will to give this up in the name of a better game.
