i hope this topic hasn't been covered already, but i'm sharing the internet so i have limited time to search the forum...

anyway, as far as away teams go, will the player's character always have to lead them on the surface, or stay on the ship, or will we have the option? also, i know it was discussed on another thread, but will there be mounts on the surface? like, small shuttles or buggies to get around? did we get an answer on that question?

yes you as the captain would lead your away team with 4 of your bridge crew. unless you team up with other players. but the away team limit is 5

Having the player always lead the away missions makes the most sense. What I'm very curious to know is how their background will play in each mission, if at all. I'm guessing that there won't be that many missions in which my background (archaeologist, scientist, etc) makes a difference in story/plot/mission.

I think that players will always lead away team missions, but we do not know anything about whether or not small ground-based vehicles will be in the game.

Here is my question though, does the captain have to go, or can I just go down with say my first officer and science officer and random redsirt? Am I the captain, or am I simply in control of the ship and its crew? Either way, could be cool.

I'm pretty sure your Captain is always going, due to it being "your character".

I think so, too. I see no sense in staying on the ship because ofthe need of making experience. Do you want to get experience without working for it?

I don't think that's what he means. I think the question is; do I have to always use my Captain or can I take control of another officer to lead an Away Team? In TNG, 9 times out of 10 it was Riker who led them, not Picard for safety/security reasons. That would allow you to build your captain for starship duties and my XO for ground missions.

Im looking forward to the exploration aspect. I have missed it in the other games. I hope STO will give an elobrate description of the different specaities we can choose for our character and the associated strengthes/weaknesses.

Even with that, they are probably going the ole Kirk route in my opinion, where the captain does go on away missions. This way, your main character is always there to lead the way and be the hero. Of course, I wouldn't object to having your captain stay onboard while you take control of your XO and team in that fashion.

yes this topic has been disscussed in several threads before. and as someone already stated here, cryptic is leaning back to TOS away teams (captian lead) even though it goes against TNG president where the captian stays on the ship 90% of the time. as far as we can tell its simply for gameplay issues. if you r the captian would u want to sit on the bridge while your NPCs runnaround on the planet having all the fun?

personally i always want to smack riker in the mouth every time he told picard he couldnt go some where b/c it was too dangerous. im a kirk fan and the captian shouldnt be some *****fied baby hiding behind his comand chair!!

i would have had worf push riker out and air lock for telling me i cant beam down to the planet !

i'm kinda looking at it from a chess player's perspective... . do i want to, or should i want to, always put my king out there? also, i thought that all the characters, including the captain, were under my command. in other words, i thought that since they weren't doing the player bridge crew thing, i was thinking that the entire bridge crew including the captain was treated as a single unit, so to speak.... does that make sense?

in WoW terms i'm thinking, instead of the hunter with his pet boar, more like, i play the game from a "god" point of view and all the toons are 'pets'.

anyway... i guess this kinda answers my question. personally, i'm thinking since i'm a real person watching the game through the monitor, and not my captain's eyes... it wouldn't bother me to leave my captain on the bridge. in a fire fight he wouldn't be much use anyway... he'd just get shot.
