View Full Version : Player housing/ quarters.
Ok there are a few topics on the question but I wanted to pitch in. (Kind of relates to whoever made the instanced starbase housing thread.)
Personally I like the idea, a place for you and your friends to hang out.. and to store prestige items could impliment mini-games and so on.
Problem is, in lord of the rings online.. its all nice.. but a little... bare.. theres not a lot to do.
My idea is that you could start with a small bunk space, spartan and baisc. Then move on to whatever you can afford with prestige points etc. Untill you can have your own San Fransisco penthouse ;). Have newsfeeds, the ability to call up a library of music to listen to (As we see with picard in First Contact.) off your HD, a general social space almost akin to PS3's Home idea? Or am I just being to froogle with my ideas?
Anyway what would you think? And how would you like it?

I hate to be off topic allready, but You bring up an interesting point. I wonder how much of Earth will be explorable. I like the idea of being able to purchase space on Earth.

It'd make more sense to me that the Captains ready room (which travels around the galaxy with us) have the customizable features.
Pictures or models of the ships we've previously commanded.
A display case for our medals and commendations.
Mementos from places we've visited.
Etc.
Along the same lines, the Holodeck could be used (among other things) to show all the planets we've visited/discovered.

I figured the captain's ready room and quarters would be our customization habitat zone. Which makes sense since I plan to spend about... ohhh... 20 min. on Earth. I mean, I live on a space ship, why would I want to have a house? Even Picard didn't own his own home on Earth. He had to crash with his brother.

I thought they mentioned somewhere about having your own quarters on your ship? Also, Picard's brother has fields of grapes.. no doubt he had a lot of wine stored away somewhere. :D

I definitely want to see player housing in the game, but I think that it would be best if each character was restricted to having some kind of quarters onboard a ship. I will understand if player housing is not in the game upon launch, but beyond that I hope that it is a relatively high priority because I think that it is an aspect of the game which really contributes to the realism of the universe.

Id love to have a fully customizable quarters, and IMO the player quarters are the one area you can have complete 100% customization without offending someone for breaking canon.
At the same time, itd be awesome to be able to have your own lil home on your ship.

We probably will have access to captains quarters, and also we probabyl can have quarters aboard a space station like DS9 or on ground planet bases.
I would not mind having two houses. One on a ship or space station, and one on a planet.

I'm not sure that there would be much need for any sort of housing outside your quarters onboard your ship and perhaps a ready room. Considering that most of this game is probably going to be spent galavanting around the galaxy and looking for new life and new civilizations what point would there be then to have quarters on Earth or Qonos for that matter? Chances are that you're not going to be spending all that much time on or around Earth and will probably be logging in or out of the game either in orbit around or on a starbase/space station or planet or maybe in the middle of nowhere in space, so any housing on Earth or Qonos would most likely go largely unused.

Personally for me I see no need for a home/player controlled quarters on some starbase or planet that you may only visit once or twice.
I still think the Ready Room and Personal Quarters are the best route to take.
Ready Room with some general themed ideas. Still need to make it presentable to others so a guideline general themes would be cool for me.
Personal Quarters I say go wild with. Not like you will be having everyone on board dropping by to see your 70s Disco crib anyways. hehe I wonder if you can still get shag carpet and black lights in the 25th century.

I agree. It might still be neat to have your own personal space inside of Fleet owned Space stations (given to Fleet members by Fleet leadership), but I still dont have to have that as long as Quarters and Ready room are customizable.;)

Just like the other post like this one, I'll put my two cents in again. I'd say a Ready Room would be as far as it needs to go to keep this from turning into Star Trek Sims. Personally, I don't care about putting furniture in a room or seeing pink fluffy curtains. If we are to have it, then I think the customization options should be limited to adding historical artifacts, trophies, or ST related decor.

I really liked the way housing is done in Star Wars Galaxies ....and Wow....please let me explain. In lotro housing is cool....you can set the music you hear....do a little fishing, store some items but as was already said....its not very useful.
In WoW for the 4 of 5 people in the world who have not played it and dont know. You get extra rested experience when you go to an in and hang out or log off. You gain this bonus experience regardless of where you are when you log off but you gain it a LOT faster if your in an inn. So it makes sense to log off in an inn.
In SWG....the pre combat upgrade....As you played the game your avatar got tired....worn out from the trials of the day and you would loose some stats. The way to make up for this was to head to the cantina or your pad. Also you were able to have manufacturing gear in your house....and vendors. So you could make your "fricken lazar beam" or armor...swords...whatever....load up your vendor and advert the location of your house to sell stuff.
A lot of folks on SWG put a lot of effort into having a cool looking house/shop. While this may not be feasable for a star ship captain....its just a couple of ideas of things that make quarters/housing useful as well as a way to draw others to your house and show off a bit.
A bit off topic but still worth mentioning....in a game called Earth and Beyond....they had manufacturing terminals only in space stations. I thought this was GREAT because it forced people out of their ships and into their avatars. You got some face to face ya know. That made the stations a gathering place for folks and of course the centrally located stations were the most popular trade hubs......I miss that game...cant wait till the emulator is finished.

bleh, SWG has the WORST housing ever (followed closely by UO). Nothing peeves me off more then trying to get from point A to B and having to navigate my way through a maze of player owned structures that are placed at what seems completly random. Really I would rather have a horde of bloodthirsty 12yr old uber leet pk's chasing me.
