KOTOR Online

I'm right with you guys, too. As it is I'm on Lord of the Rings Online, I'll definitely be here on ST: Online and who could resist KoToR online? I'll have to at least try Stargate Online when it comes out as well. Good grief, I'm gonna be spending money!!

For the starcraft online do you mean world of starcraft hehehe j/k

i know your pain. I been playing star wars galaxies for 5 years. I torn myself away from that game lol.

Anyways I am a bigger fan of star trek then any other franchise but the old republic online seems interesting. It will be a damper of what this game could be. For a long time star wars galaxies dominated the sci fi mmo area. Eve online cleaned up the people that hate ground or wanted nothing to do with star wars.

SWG time is finaly over. Stargate worlds, star trek online, KOTOR, and its going to be a matter of time before blizzard decides to jump on the sci fi car with their starcraft franchise.

Man 2009/2010 is going to be a interesting time for the mmo market.

In the end we'll have to concentrate on whichever ones we enjoy most - personally it'll be good competition and maybe get us out of the old drip feed of MMOs. I know WOW has been crowned King so far but a lot of people at this point dual-play it with another MMO.

I think STO is a good choice out of those three. SG has disappointed me with the increasingly lower production values (though the last Atlantic episode was a pleasant reminder how good it can be) and KOTOR will inevitably be a Jedi/Sith fest which not everyone wants.

Did I mention only STO will be the only one likely to have ships :). That's a nice differentiation over the competition and Cryptic have a very sleek MMO development process by all acounts so it should beat KOTOR to release anyway.

There are way too many new MMO games...
Some bean counter figures we'll be playing more all the time...

I'm not sure they can keep finding new players more than competing for the same $15 as several other games.

My brain can't handle several MMOs at the same time. I'll play Stargate Worlds unto STO starts.

No I totally agree with you on this point. SGW is extremely underwhelming. You can spot a WoW clone a mile away. SOme of the pictures they put out at the beginning were pretty acceptible but all the new stuff looks like recycled junk.

Seeing th characters for STO made me feel a lot better about the direction the games going. Yes they are very "clean" but they're also very anatomically correct. In other words, they ain't a ugly low poly freak show. Hehe...

Stargate Worlds will suck. Just look at it. It's Halo and WoW with Stargate races. Seriously the only two you need to bother with are Star Trek and Star Wars. well star trek online obviously. i dont know what stargate is, never been interested, and swtor is a huge failure already. so the choice is clear

Hi there.Well Stargate is a sci-fi show about portals that can lead to planets million of light years away from earth. It is based on the 1993 stargate movie with Kurt russel .The series lead character is Richard Dean Anderson or...MCGUIVER of the 80's one of my favorite shows of all time.He is absolutely fantastic (see a paraller here with Scot Bakula who stared in Quantum leap a amazing for its time sci-fi series.)
Anyway the stargate series are woth watching as also farscape, battlestar galactica, firefly and a few others.
Also about the mmo game it is using the latest UNREAL 3 engine runtimes it can be played in 3rd or first person view,it has real time combat and last but not least the latest trailer showed graphics that easily could kick the ass of any mmo up to date(exept AOC ) .
Also kotor can also be a great mmo.
Even if you didn;t like the first kotor(by the way if you only played the second kotor -it was crap as it was developed by another company) Bioware has gotten better and better by the time.
Have you played Mass effect ? Especially provided you play the pc version on a gaming pc you would get lost in one the best looking, curious, living, thriving sci-fi space adventure/opera you can imagine.So...give them a chance at least....

Must echo the original poster's sentiments. We go from nothing except WoW clones, for the most part, to suddenly some very interesting MMORPG prospects, many on the horizon at roughly the same time.

Like a number of you, I'm sure, I like to try every MMORPG that comes out unless my instincts scream at me that I just won't like it.

I expect I'll try most of the MMORPGs mentioned here -- except for two. The Stargate franchise, while very well made, never grabbed me. I can't even tell you why, it just never did. I also expect I'll pass on Worlds of StarCraft. I genuinely disliked playing WoW, and I can't see how playing a science-fiction version of WoW could make me happy.

Besides, I now know that most of the SF ideas in StarCraft which I thought were so cool were actually lifted from Warhammer 40,000. I'd rather try Warhammer 40,000 Online when it arrives.

Right now, I've only been playing Lord of the Rings Online, as I have for some time, but once Star Trek Online releases, I don't know if good old LotRO will hold onto the second spot.

The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic from Bioware remains one of the best computer games I've ever played. This makes Bioware's Star Wars: The Old Republic a major contender for my second MMO spot, even this early.

I learned from experience that two MMORPGs at once is my limit. Beyond that, my play time gets too fragmented, so I don't really enjoy what I have.

Two slots available -- one filled already by Star Trek Online. The battle for that second slot is gonna be a brutal battle royale, that's for sure!

This one is not an mmo but more like a single-player version of eve-online...

X3:Terran Conflict

It's not perfected yet, to be honest it has some scripting issues that could be fixed, like the auto-mining one and the auto-trading scripts used to assign your ships to do various tasks...

but in spite of that it's pretty cool. I like being able to build up a fleet from one ship, then assign my merchants to go auto-trade while I fly my warship/scout around and explore... I can switch ships anytime by just docking them at the same place. Switch from flying the fighhter-carrier to one of the fighters it's carrying, then switch back, then switch to another ship... I like it.

It does have some bugs tho... but if you like eve-o you would love x3:tc because it's also based on the same foundation-game -> 'Elite" that was such a hit years ago, just like eve-o... but without the other players, just npc's.

If you're good at scripting you can mod it anyway you like too...

"Earth and Beyond" was another good one, too bad it got dropped... anyone ever play E&B?

I'm gonna probably be playing STO permanently if its really good.
I'll probably still have my Warhammer Online account...because its a good game for PvP Face Smashin!
And, I'll probably try out Stargate...if its more like the Atlantis Series ...I'll like it...if its like SG1...I won't have very much to do with it. SG1 just wast not that great to me.

Star Wars...meh...the movies were ok but I'm not interested in the Story Line/ Cannon enough to want to play a game built upon it. To much Jedi this and Jedi that. If it was more Space Exploration ...yeah I might give it a looksy. Jedi's are over-rated. Cpt Kirk would punch them in the Face.

And I'm soooooooooo done with WoW...I don't care if they allow you to play it for free i'm never touching that game again. Way too many Hard Core Scripted Raids that take up way too much time to "Farm". I could hand farming Faction...and then being done with it....But i'm not doing a Dungeon..the same one...ever Mon, Wed, and Fri night just to try and get 6 pieces of gear....that's just stupid. They need to come up with a better reason for me to play their game if they want me to play it. Something that involves "FUN" preferably. Cause even their new x-pac you'll level up to 80 in two weeks...and do all the 5 man content in like two weeks ...then get all you want out of it in like 3 months...then the "Redundant" search for a good guild that can do the Raids starts (Cause someone looted a Health Pot in your guild and 10 people left and now the guild is Disbanded) Then the "Redundant" raiding. No thank you! I'll play EVE Online instead...its just as redundant and can be played all by yourself.

Ok I hate WOW does it show?

Yea i know what you mean man. I used to play a Warlock and was in a semi-hardcore guild. But, like you said, its kinda stupid to sit trough the same instance over and over again, so i quit that guild and did a bit of pvp for a few weeks. Now that is over as well thanks to all the Warlock nerfs. Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. I had some great moments in WoW and as a Trekky fan i really hope STO can give me even better moments.

As for Starcraft Online, don't hold your breath unless Blizz intentionally put out false information on their WoW forums some time ago. Sorry if this is in wrong place and sorry for the rant, just need to, you know.

Excellent. That puts the pressure of competition on ALL the developers. That means, the customer wins. If only one turned up, you would have a choice one-in-two choice: play or not. If all four come out, and you can only afford one, you have a one-in-four choice, and you will probably play the better of the three.

The chances are, most people only play one. All three MMOs are probably aiming to salvage some of the wreck that was once the SWG community. The developers of each MMO know they have to come up with something the other two MMOs will not offer. That means they will also try extra-hard to make each MMO good. :D

[edit]

Unless, of course, the biggest selling point of STO will be the Star Trek license. Many fans seem to be eager to jump in just because it's Star Trek.

dryzabone
10-31-2008, 05:29 PM
If the biggest selling point would indeed be just the Star Trek licence it would simply fail. If they were going to pull a stunt like that, they are probably better off going the Bethesda way and release a single player game with a Star Trek sticker on the box like Legacy instead. I might be wrong though, but i always thought MMO's are significantly more expensive to produce than a single player game, so you want the initial customers to stick around after the first free month.

Same here...finally quit playing SWG a couple months ago (when the lame card came was implemented...this was my last straw after being there non-stop since beta)....what a relief that was...like a well over due divorce.....and I feel the guy that says he will never bother with another SW game again. I am also unsure if I will bother with the new SW MMORPG (did check out its forum though)

To answer the OP I will most likely just play STO as ST was always my Sci-fi of choice...the rest of those games can go to hell as far as I am concerned. If STO does not work out I guess I will have to hibernate until an STO that does work comes out.
