I dont know if the Devs have addressed this or not but . . . how do they plan to add new factions to a game after release? I mean how will they compete economically and militarily with factions who have been in game for months before them . . . especially in the case of a persistant universe

I believe it will go along these lines:
First the Romulans will be added... and then the Klingons and Federation will become allies so as they can survive against the might of the star empire.
:P
Seriously... not sure they will announce plans about additional Factions. There is too much scope for people saying: But you said....!
Let's just hope there is some thought about expansion before they finish creating the game so it fit's together nicely! :)

I wouldn't worry about the Romulans for example getting up to speed, it's not like once a new faction is add, they will be at war with the others. Plus if done right, they will have a grace period to setup new areas to settle. Then when they are up to speed with players, the game it on. lol
But come on, if you add the Romulans, how many people do you think will flock over to their side? IMO you might get a rash of players from both the Klingon and Federation ranks going there. After all I know a ton of guys that want to be a Romulan. :D

It would be kinda cool if they kept it at odd numbers, such as 3 races (Feds, Klings, Roms) and then 5 races, then 7 races, etc. It keeps people on their toes imo, sort of like how DAoC had it. There is no single side kicking another side's butt, since that third empire comes into the equation to throw things out of whack a bit.

Oh yeah the minute romulans are introduced I am there! Even if it means I have to delete a character I've spent months on.
Odd numbered factions does sound interesting actually. I also can't help but love the 1984 balance that would likely arise: If 1 faction becomes too powerful the other 2 just band together to take them down a peg... and then the cycle repeats with a different uneasy alliance.

I really do not think that new factions will have a difficult time adapting into the game because I believe that many players will be excited about the prospect of new factions and will likely create characters within that faction, if only just to test them out in order to see what is different from affiliation to affiliation.

thats true . . . i have no doubt, but using the level system (namely WoW) as an example if they added a third faction now, the people who would flock there would be inconsequential compared to the massive amount of lvl 70s (80s now) who would gank them at the first sight

I'd prefer that they just stick to the two factions and just add races to each with expansions.

I would bet the new factions added in expansions will side with the Feds or the Empire, adding 2 new factions per expansion to keep it even. That way you would not have as many people flocking to other factions just to play the new faction. If things are building up to a major war, the other factions being weakened as they are from the past 3 decades of conflict, would side with a major power for security reasons. But who knows. This game has so many possibilities I get goose bumps thinking about it..:p

I don't know how many Romulan players would agree with you.

Probably not many, and you know they would have to pair them with the Federation as the Klingons and Romulans HATE each other.

It just seems too unwieldy to add entire new factions and intertwine them with the existing game.

I don't know of any examples of adding new factions except maybe in the case of City of Villains. It's a common thing to see in RTS, but that doesn't mean it'll translate well into an MMORPG. I actually see the problem being the Romulans being overpopulated in the beginning, and the balance will be for a few months that they have superior numbers, but lower technology. I wonder if they might consider a 'character swap'....allow you to translate an existing faction character into a new faction character, possibly at a drop in points, but possibly an even swap, up to a certain point build.
Not saying these are a good or bad idea, just an idea or a thought.
