So I got to thinking, did a search, and didn't come up with much.

Every so often, the Federation would come across a ship flown by a person of no allegiance whatsoever. His ship was ether stolen, purchased stolen, or pieced together from a few other ships. My question is, will there be a freelance faction? Work for whomever wants to pay you, go wherever you want, and the big perk, complete ship customization. I dont know how feasible it would be to implement, but it sure would be fun. Maybe fly by a wreck of a federation ship and strip some tech off it for your own ship or barter for maybe a romulan cloaking device. Anyone else got any ideas?

Last I heard/read, is that there are only 2 factions right now with the possibility of playing the Romulans and/or Cardassians in the future.

Realistically yes, of course. Infact I'd wager to say that the majority of ships out in the galaxy account for these unaffiliated ships, but, sadly, I doubt they will put that in place, because then what do you do about PVP? Can you be attacked by anyone, anywhere? I like the idea, but most game companies like to keep it simple for their base (stupid players who need their hands held).

As much as I'd love to see this in game, and would play it, I highly doubt they'll do this. They're already adding in a bunch of species and ships and tech and what not, they'd essentially have to come up with even more content, which I doubt they'll do since they'll probably already give you crazy great customization.

I really hope that a freelance-type faction is implemented into the game at one point or another, but even when the game launches I can see some players choosing to roleplay their characters so that they lead rogue ships.

2 factions will be playable at launch. romulans have been mentioned in a future expansion, in addition to other potential races.

Orions could of fit the bill nicely, but they are spoken for already.

i have mixed feelings about this . . . yes it would be cool to be a merc highered out to people but on the other hand . . . what would you do as a noob or if nobody would higher you? would it be an actual faction? i think it would be cool if you started out in the federation and could leave and join the Maquís or something like that . . . not with your ship of course . . .

It could be cool, at a higher level to.. run away from Starfleet and embark on the life of a boomer, or future Marquis.

In that light they could have Federation (but not starfleet) as the faction, and be able to choose Starfleet or indipendent career. OR again become indipendent as a presitge at higher level, somewhat reducing the possibilites of a universe overfilled with freelancers.

I believe thier reasoning for not having freelance/neutral players is that those players would miss out on the vast majority of gameplay. The universe/galaxy is set to be very faction orientated from the info we have so far with stuff like each side vying for control of planets / regions in order to get access to specific resources etc. A neutal person would just not be able to participate in the same way.

I think the closest thing we could hope for on this lines would be to see a faction similar to the Maquis where at least the players would have a 'team' or 'side'.

The Maquis went freelance, and you know what us Feds do to the likes of them. ;)
