I did a search and didn't see a thread about this yet, so here it is. I really really really want to be able to change my ship's equipment. Such things as color of the hull, armor plating, shields, phasors, torpedoes and other numerous equipment. If this has been asked for can someone drop me a link, if not how about we come up with a list on what types of items we'd like to customize.

They touched upon this in the article in Game Informer.
You'll be able to customise all kinds of stuff. From your saucer-section, to your nacelles, to your exterior and interior decor, to the name of your ship. :)

I do not like the idea of customization much, at least for the Federation. My take on this is that Starfleet massed produced a series of ships. Some have been modified, and that's great, and others can be modified, that's great to. But custom colors of Federation ships? Nope, I hate that idea! The Federation is a structured and ordered idealistic society. I believe small fleet badges are ok, but hull coloring and huge "one click" hull customizing doesn't fit the genre. I stated that an "upgrade" level be instated much like a rank "level" or a ship command "level". When you achieve the next custom level, you will also have your choice of which starbase to dock at that does which specific upgrade you wish. One starbase may upgrade your phasers, while another starbase can upgrade your warp narcels. That kind of customization (for the Feds) is a great idea. It helps keep the balance. It helps everyone to having a very unique starship, and it fits the canon/genre.

does anyone know which classes theres going to be?
Q: What races will I be able to play?
A: The plan is Human, Vulcan, Andorian, Klingon, Orion, Gorn, and several others. You will also be able to create your own race with its own custom look and attributes.
Q: Can I play something other than a Captain like a Doctor or an Engineer?
A: Everyone is a Captain, (remember, if you command a ship, you are automatically a Captain), and you will command a crew, but that does not limit your role. Your character will still be able to choose from a variety of career paths, such as Engineer, Tactical Officer, Doctor, Science Officer, etc. Your career path is your root, and will affect your skills, and how you command your crew. Consider Jean-Luc Picard, Beverly Crusher, Worf and Kathryn Janeway. Picard was an archeologist and diplomat, Crusher was a doctor, Worf a security/tactical officer, and Janeway was a scientist. Each eventually chose a career in command and became ship captains. This does not mean the game will limit your ship choices based on your profession – far from it. The examples are simply an example of how the game design was inspired.
From the FAQ.

QFT. There might be a LITTLE customization allowed, but by and large, StarFleet has protocols, it's simply the same way the US Military uses the same ammunition type, or w/e, it's all logistics.

Ugh, I hate to be the guy to say this, but try the search function, there are a ton of posts already about ship and player customization.

It's a game guys. Cryptic is known for customization. I highly doubt you'll be pigeon holed into a very specific ship without being able to change anything, and if you do you're kicked out of the federation. In other games I really don't care about customization, but with STO and CoH/CoV I feel that it really makes you who you are.

Well, in the series the modifications of starships were severely limited due to budget constraints. The most they could do was change the name on a model to represent a different ship (and sometimes not even the numbers, heh). However, different ships of the same class do undergo modifications, the enterprise in All Good Things was a prime example (even if it wasn't a regular timeline ship, it did show the capability of the Federation to have heavily modified ships). The Lakota as well as various smaller changes to ships showed their moddability. So I don't consider the mass moddability of ships in STO to be defying cannon in any way.
It will just be taking place on a much grander scale than could be seen in the series since this is a game and costomization ftw.

Sorry, but I've got to go with 'fun > canon'.
Everyone flying around in 1 of 18 possible faction ships = bleh.
The more ways I've got to visually customize my ship, to make it look different than all the others, the happier I'll be ;)

I'm thinking that after I get a ship, I shouldn't be able to immediately customize it, that comes later with experience, learning about new technology, *leveling* up, etc. This also covers customizing the crew. If we can totally change the uniforms then what's going to keep them looking Federation or Klingon?

Although this topic has definitely been discussed before, I agree that the ability to customize ships is important and I really hope to see an in-depth system for doing so in the game!
