I'm suprised at the lack of questions as to wether there will be an explorable holodeck. Initially the possibility does seem rather far fetched, but if the Cryptic engine can do what Cryptic says it does, surely this is not beyond the games reach. Is there a possibility of playable holodeck missions, perhaps relating to specific episodes of Star Trek if nothing else?
Also, will the interiors of the ships be largely explorable or limited to a set number of rooms, and can I bring my friends over to hang out in my ship?

I think it would be pretty cool to have some 'missions' that take place on the Holodeck. There are many examples of shows being played out there. Perhaps even use the Holodeck as a 'Practice Room' of sorts where we can set battles and fight them out, perhaps against other players as well.
I can see many applications for the Holodeck.

Crap. I was hoping no one would mention the holodeck and that by some miracle Cryptic would somehow forget they exist. If I were Picard, somewhere in the second or third season, I'd have ordered that danged thing removed from the ship and replaced with a ballpit. I'd like to see a ballpit take over the ship.

The issue of holodecks has definitely been discussed before, but all we know is that holodecks will be in the game eventually but we don't exactly know when.

It would be nice if they put a holodeck in, I would hope they would make it so you can make battle simalatins. In star trek bridge commander you can do that and it was fun to do. That would be nice but it would also be cool if they can put in holodeck programs from different episodes like capt. picards Dixon Hills programs or maybe dax's klingon program from DS9. That would be nice just to relax after a long borg battle :)

Due to the open nature of the holodeck it would be quite cool if user generated content (textures, meshes, script) can be made by the more creative segments of the player base and downloaded to be used in the holodeck.

All of these are good points. Personally, I think it'd be awesome to be able to set up practices for ship battles or even landing party missions. It would be tough to make them do almost anything you wanted though. I imagine that maybe the holodeck would be a housing system (or an extension of it) like in other MMORPGs. Maybe you could customize your own program to relax in after a long day at the Neutral Zone.
But seriously... why do that when I can go to Quarks Bar? I bet he's still alive.

Holodeck missions sound awesome. I'm for it and anything else they want to throw in that relates to holograms.

I think the reason not much detail being released is due to the scope the Holodeck can take. If done right it would probably take an Expansion unto itself to do it justice.
User created (Dev approaved) content, similation training, rogue holodeck mishap missions, etc would bring a unique approach and many hours of enjoyment (just by itself) to set STO apart from other games and make it that much better.

Even if it comes out as an expansion later, I think it's a necessary component of any late century Star Trek game. I realize the idea of a holodeck can be problematic. The scope of different gameplay styles could potentially be overwhelming when trying to account for all that the Holodeck has been used for in hard cannon Star Trek, but at the same time it would seriously add to the depth of the game.
