What I mean it this. Yes we have Tricoders to scan stuff, but is there a difference between them in Trek Lore. Think about it for a sec.
You see them used by Medical, Engineering, and survey teams, so does it mean you have to have a Tricorder profession tuned to use?
Example I am think is as follows.
1. Medical tricoder - Used in all areas of medical treatment, and even comes with a smaller isolation scanner, to check key areas on the body.
2. Engineering tricoder - Used in all areas of maintenance and building, has complete blueprints of all ship or starbase setups, and all ranges of materials used. Quick way to help find problems before they start.
3. Survey tricoder - Used on away missions and is used to take samples of the enviroment, and come pairs it to all others that is on file. Also used to track moment, and look for any lifeforms in the area.
Now in STO IMO I feel we should have tricoders broken down into different fields of use, so if your medical person, then you need to use a medical tricoder to help you do your job. Now I know a lot of people feel the tricoder should be a generic piece of game equipment, but if done right, the tricoder should have different levels of use, and you should be able to upgrade it. Along if have tricoders set for different career paths only.
What are your thoughts on the tricoders and their use in STO?

I don't really feel we have enough information on character career pathing and how they will be integrated into game play to even really make considerations on this as yet.

Well going by what Jack said in past interviews, we will have career paths we can take. Plus it only makes since to do it like that, even with everyone controling their own ships. So if we are going to follow a career path, why not have tricoders set to work in those fields only.

I'm sure they will be in there, like all other equipment, but we dont know how everything works yet.

True we don't know how it will work in the game, the only thing we can reference is what we seen in the TV shows and movies. But isn't one of the points of this forum is to talk about ideas, even if we don't have a clue what the DEV team is doing?
I am sure they still read what is posted here, and maybe we can help work a few small game ideas out. Even if we miss the mark by a mile on what is being done, at least we can give our 2 cents on what we would like to see happen. ;)

They said they want to capture the feel for the TV shows, and a huge part of that was more then combat but the innovative ways the crews used their technology to solve problems.
Being able to customize your tricorder, phasers and communicators to do different things and solve problems is an intergral part of the Star Trek universe.

Tricorders are a must...
If your investigating a planet, what are upsossed to do, call your ship for surface scans or check the STO forums for anyone else who happened upon the same location.!
I dont want to feel my way across the cave for hidden walls or traps, I dont want to breath toxic gasses invisible to the naked eye or have some low life Ferengi jump out a rob me.
I'd like to scan for for a wide range of things, ie, gasses, lifeforms, thermals ect,. even that which isn't mission specific...
TRICORDERS are just as useful as phasers and medpacks... I believe we will se them in STO.

Yes they will be in STO, but mainly what I am trying to do is break down the different uses of the tricoder. So way not have them tied to your Career path as well. An engineer can't take a medical tricoder to do his repairs, same with a doctor using one setup for engineering. Each depatment should have tricorders setup to help them max out their proformance. Sure they are generial tricoders used to do basic scans, but I think it would be a good idea to make a few tricoders career path only, meaning you can upgrade your tricoder as needed.
The Tricoder is a very important tool in Star Trek, so why not make it a tool you can setup for different areas of game play too. ;)

A scientific field like geology... they say we can manufacture, through resource collection ect.
One such use...
You join Starfleet Science and say enter geology, you get your standard tricorder.
As you advance in your field it becomes more aligned to your selected field, your tricorder would pick up other minerals ect. You are awarded addons to increase depth of search peramitters.

Now your getting the idea. Same if your in the medical field, as you gain more skills, you open deeper uses of your tricoder through upgrades. It's a tool you need, and I see no reason why it can't get improved on as you gain more skills in your professions.

Why are they called tricorders? Are there 3 specific things they scan for? Or is is for the 3 different professions like you mention?
I'd like to see them broken down to the above 3 "professions", if not 4, one being a completely general tricorder.

Hey, maybe we could set up a blackmarket and sell skills in the areas we are involved in.
We could barter with Ferengi, if I need an isolinaer chip to find the more precious minerals, insert it into the tricorder and it aids me in finding traces of trilithium, I could really make your star glow brighter with that stuff.
The blackmarket could provide other chips to add to your collection, at a price.
I'll look forward to experimenting with one.
Now wheres that Reigellian Crystal, the seller said it was authentic...
