So I am really excited about fleet play... but what can and can't we do?
Sure, we can build starbases... but what else can we do? How does it all work?
For a person starting a fleet (yes, this early...), it would be nice to know what the maximum amount of ships is, and if you can take your whole fleet on every mission, or just some, or whatnot.
I know that Star Trek Online details are a bit hard to come by, but if you have any information on fleets, please post, and I will add them to the list!
P.S. Facts only, please!
What we know:
Fleets can build starbases.
Team groups have limits of five.
Theoretically infinite number of players in a fleet.

I meant what can and can't we do with fleets. But you are right, they can't be Borg... :P

No information other then team groups having limits of 5. As of now you can have a theoretically infinite number of players in your fleet. I would imagine you wont have infinate troops to fill your fleets with so be happy with anything from 50-200.:D

There is already a lot of speculation on how structured or purposeful Fleets will be, it's perhaps my favorite topic. However, it's all entirely suggestion and speculation. The only safe assumption at this point is that whatever Cryptic decides, it's going to miff off the 'independent' players, if it's anything more than just a superficial tag that says you belong to a group.

This is in reference to Away Teams on planet surface missions, which were also usually restricted to teams of 5 or so in ST Canon. I'm sure it's a design restriction for the game, as well.
Space operations, on the other hand, will probably have no restrictions on the number of Fleet members present in any given area of space...but there may be restrictions on space-based quests.
We'll have to wait for confirmation from Crytic on these details.

Smaller group sizes are better, because how many times have we all been in a group got halfway through a dungeon or instance and one of the key team members (tank/healer/dps) either goes LD or has to leave to do RL.
The bigger the teamsize the more frequently this will happen.

Remember that things will change. If the initial team size is giving players some problems, than the developers will change it. Nothing is set it stone even after the game comes out.
My #1 question is this: How soon can we build a Starbase? And what can of defenses will it have? And can we dock ships at it?

Well we know more then just the fact they can have star bases. They can having mining platforms, ship yards, there is fleet store or some sort that was mentioned. There is also threats only fleets can face. Only fleets can build the best starships and distribute them to the fleet members.
In ground the limit is 5 captains going down to do an away mission which is ok because in star trek you do not see a awhole lot on away missions anyways, so i am fine with that.
In space they mentioned epic encounters that a bunch of ships and come together to face the threat or encounter. So there is a bit of information about fleets. Now what systems, ranking systems, tite system, guild bank/treasury system and leadership system they going to place? No one knows except the horses mouth and in time they will reveal that I am sure.

I think that the number one thing that I want to know is what kind of content will be available for fleets or other large groups of players, such as high-end missions that require a large number of players or raids on starbases and such.

I wouldn't get hung up on the 5 number. Most every game has a group limit, but these days they provide a way for multiple groups to link up. I hope STO does this. Canon be damned, 5 is too small a limit.

CoH was my first MMO.. There I made many good friends. The team size for CoX was 8.. I can't tell you how disrupting it was when we ALL went to play WoW... and found that three of our "normal group" got left out...
I will accept if STO only allows the 5-per teams.... but I *hope* they can up that a bit.
