I decided earlier this year, I would round out my Star Trek knowledge by watching through Enterprise. FYI, I really didn't care for it. But that's beside the point. I was really bothered by the fact that Captain Archer was allowed to have a dog on his ship. I understand the doctor(I'm not even going to try and spell his name) having animals for medicinal purposes, but it seems that on a mission of exploration, some admiral or commodore would be smart enough to say, "I know you're the captain, but no dogs".

I think if your ship has a mission that's conducive to pets, such as the Enterprise D, than that would be okay. But if you're a combat ship, it just seems like a bad idea. I'm sure a lot of people will disagree, but that's just my take on things.

Then again, maybe I'm taking my disdain for Enterprise out on the dog. I don't seem to have a problem with Data's cat Spot. /rant

[Shrug] Its not unheard of in the past for a Captain to have a pet on board.

I see no problems with having a pet on a starship Jean-Luc Picard had a Fish :p and as you said Data have a cat. The Enterprise was not a combat ship but a exploration ship.

Just because you can have a pet doesnt mean you HAVE to have one, if you dont like them so much, just dont get one if they become avaliable... simple problems simple answers =)

and btw: i dont like beagles... too cliche.. but to each his own

Oh if you are a Federation ship and have this pet. and if a Klingon ship attacks and board your ship just laugh at the Klingons and throw Tribbles!!!!!! The Klingon will run away so fast and cry like little girls :D

If you don't want a pet on your ship, it doesn't mean everybody else shouldn't be able to have one. Picard had his fish, Archer had his dog, if somebody wants a pet they should be able to.

And if a Klingon commander wants his favorite Targ on board then so much the better.

This is an MMO, and I think most MMO's have found that people like "ownership". Be it houses, mounts, pets, clothing, armor, droids, ships etc...

Yes having a dog on a combat ship might seem out of place, but it is a video game and I'm not hear to simulate realism, I'm here to relax, kick back and have some fun, if that means I have a dog running around my ship so be it. It is after all my ship.

On a side note, the GameInformer article stated that bridge crew members will function like pets, so maybe you can name one of them Porthos :o

Starfleet vessels are not combat ships, they are primarily exploration and science ships, with combat being secondary in almost all cases. As far as a ept goes, I plan to have one if we can aboard ship.

Regardless of ship design, starfleet itself is a military organization(however that ties into the discussion). As far as pets though, as I have said earlier I have nothing against them :o

I'm pretty sure the Klingon commander in Star Trek III (coulda been ST V but pretty sure it was III) had pets on the bridge even. I don't see how this effects gameplay in anyway unless the dog can randomly **** on computers or crew members.

I kid, but I've advocated pet pets (as opposed to MMO pets) in similarly themed threads before.

I'm not necessarily against pets in the game, but I think that if they are in the game at all they will be implemented at a later time instead of at launch.

Awesome! I was going to comment earlier before my shift here at work started that I'd want a ferret to accompany me. I'd need to find a way to teach it the art of sabotage, no one would expect a ferret to beam on board your ship and wreck havoc!

in MMO's mini-pets are awesome ways to keep the players connected to the game... in Guild Wars, you get one for every year your character has a birthday - or win them durring special events such as halloween, christmas, etc - or get them as status symbols such as special edition purchase's and given out when you bought a magazine with the offer.....

they're fun ways to show off certin achivements when your in public areas - why wouldn't you want them?

Data also stated when asked who the father of spots kittens were that there were dozens if not more pets on the ship that could have been, let alone people who didnt have cats

FYI - I liked Acher having his Dog on bord. He was his family, and mans best friend.

Because you have to force your opinions down other's throats. It's a forum, if you don't like it, then start a thread telling everyone they have to have a pet. Sheesh. :D

I definitely agree, it may have been kinda wierd to have a dog aboard the 1st starfleet ship launched on a tv series, but a Capt can pull strings like that I am sure.

Now ingame is a different story, I like "ownership", houses, items, mounts, pets, armor, slave girls, etc...

I am hoping STO will be full of useful and non-useful crap "items" for my to admire and collect.

Enterprise was only the first warp 5 ship, it was not the 1st ever starfleet vessel.

Personaly I want a hu'man caged up on the bridge of my K'vort. It will be fun to throw things at it when Im bored or possibly beam it onto the surface of unscanned planets to test the atmosphere.

I agree with what someone said earlier, Porthos was not one of enterprise's problems. Was he used alittle too much yeah maybe. And beagles rule, I grew up with one so maybe I'm a little biased.

I do not know what the standing rules are for modern navies and pets, but why not let small pets be kept. This of course means you get to explore your ship or keep them in quarters on a starbase where you can take them out to show off.

I know in the Marine Corps we have a bad habit of needing a mascot around. This usually takes the shape of a Bulldog that outranks me. Seriously. They have their own dress blues and cammies and everything. Some say it's demeaning to the dog to dress them up, I say it's demeaning that it outranks me.

Look at Star Trek: The Next Generation

Patrick Stewart the Captain Jean-Luc Picard Enterprise

he has more combat and strategy in the movie, if we get to know more of it we might even had experience of watching the movie and knowing all the weakness of ships and tricks
