But ...
Where O Where ... will we be able to do things. Okay I get it, we have fleet play.
Anything else...?
exploring?
Co-op away team missions?

It seems things have been broadly assumed about cooperative play, so let us accumulate the data...
and speculate and analyze.

I will say I've agreed with the wierdness of away team missions being four Captains with four ships in orbit. However, I think it's one of those compromises that just have to be made.

Keep in mind many of these could be played from your ship or on foot:

Defense games: Borg, Klingon/Federation Invasion Forces/etc.
Offensive games: Attack enemy faction (PvP or PvE) to gain territory for your faction.
Instances: Take place in stories with your friends without outside interference. Dungeon-like.
Exploration: Some places are more dangerous then most. Bring a friend.
Instanced PvP: It's your team against theirs in all sorts of maps and styles of play!
Rescue Mission: Reply to the distress call of a friendly real player vessel with or without friends. Save the day.
Starfleet Intelligence: Use stealth, disguise and smarts with or without friends to sneak inside and enemy base, steal information, free a prisoner, etc etc.
Diplomacy: Take your friends and meet up with real or NPC players to broker a deal.
Starbase Sim: You and your friends help maintain your Starbase, upgrade it, give it more cool crap, make it livable, give it higher defenses, make it better at ship repair, etc etc etc.
Holodecks: Play either maps made by Cryptic or maps made by other players using the custom map maker. These can be out of this world insane. It would work like a custom map maker for an RTS like Warcraft III but for this MMO. Play as a Borg, play tower defense (ST:O stype :P), play maps and scenarios MADE by other players or YOU. Download their creations and everything!

I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff too.

Or it could be one ship with 4 players on the same ship.
You can visit the ships of other people, you just can't control it.

This does raise a point I was thinking about earlier. While we are captains and can't crew other ships, perhaps we (or us in control of one of our Senior Staff) could be attached to another player's vessel for a mission or two. We would have nothing to do with any ship stuff, but the mission wouldn't focus on that but perhaps on diplomacy or an Away thingy. We could help defend the ship if it was boarded too.

The majority of this is highly unlikely, at least on release.

Reality Check:
Based on what we know, which of these items might they actually include?

You are proving my point about broad assumptions.

We've got nothing but broad assumptions. Asking for which ones of those would make release would be answered with a broad assumption. Saying the majority of those are highly unlikely is a broad assumption. There's nowhere else we can really go.

Defense games: Borg, Klingon/Federation Invasion Forces/etc. - Check.
Offensive games: Attack enemy faction (PvP or PvE) to gain territory for your faction. -Check
Instances: Take place in stories with your friends without outside interference. Dungeon-like. -All planets are instanced soo... Check.
Exploration: Some places are more dangerous then most. Bring a friend. - Check.
Instanced PvP: It's your team against theirs in all sorts of maps and styles of play! -Not on release.
Rescue Mission: Reply to the distress call of a friendly real player vessel with or without friends. Save the day. - Can be done with just plain old chat.
Starfleet Intelligence: Use stealth, disguise and smarts with or without friends to sneak inside and enemy base, steal information, free a prisoner, etc etc. - Probably.
Diplomacy: Take your friends and meet up with real or NPC players to broker a deal. -Diplomacy is confirmed, but it's unlikely you'll need two people for it.
Starbase Sim: You and your friends help maintain your Starbase, upgrade it, give it more cool crap, make it livable, give it higher defenses, make it better at ship repair, etc etc etc. -Check. They call them Fleets.
-Nope.

There are a lot of assumptions that are being made on both sides of the argument, the ones I want to adress are:

Four captains beeming down to the planet. Who says the captain has to go down to the planet. Cryptic has stated that when going on away missions you select your team to beam down, does the team have to include the captain? I would be interested to see the response to this.

Along with that there is an assumption that everybodies ship will be parked in orbit. If your starting ship is runabout sized (I believe that was stated by Cryptic) it would be nice if you could dock with a larger ship or park in their shuttlebay. We know you can beam over to friends ships, what happens if that ship takes off at work? Or can you only beam over in certain situations?

I'm working off the information from "Gamer Informer" and the Web Cast mostly, combined with the FAQ and "Ask Cryptic"

Udoubtably it will function like all other MMOs in the respect that almost anything you can do by yourself, you can do with others. So if two people take the same mission, they can do it together. If two people want to explore, they can do it together. You get the picture :o

Actually that's fairly possible with what most MMO's include as far as area chat channels and Coordinate systems for the maps. I didn't play EVE for very long but one of the coolest things that I ever saw in that game was as a fleet of player ships jump in to save me from 4 other enemy player ships.

Distress Calls would supply your exact location to allies with the click of a button. It'll have high range and possibly offer small rewards like experience, reputation or something automatically. Nothing huge to avoid exploiting it for quick exp and you could probably only use it certain times (like if you've been damaged, if there's a Borg Cube chasing you, whatever).

It's one of the best moments in New Hope when Han Solo turns up in the Millenium Falcon to back up Luke's run on the Death Star. I think we'll remember that captaining that ship that just helped us is another player and you'll get the same coolness from that as we will when we cooperate on Away Teams.

Well, I don't know about that, or where you understood that from. Possibly, I suppose, but that seems more like speculation to me, and pointless, as well. Why would I ride along with someone when I can take my own starship just as easily?

Safety or speed if their ship is better defended or faster than yours.

Maybe, I guess, safety...no. 2>1. Regardless, no the point of this discussion, I don't think. Really I can't tell what it is.

I got it from the web cast where Jack talks about how we can visit other people's ships.
As for why:
Meh. Why not?

Trackin'. I suppose I just didn't absorb that part, and I keep having this image of my head of ships without interiors because so little seemed to focus on that.

I definitely think that player interaction is one of the key features of massively multiplayer online games, and although we know a few details about how players will interact I hope that the developers release more information on this topic sooner rather than later.

I'm glad this thread is getting great responses, way more than I expected.

Anyone like to comment on a co-op mission to go check out that colony in the latest screenshot. Or is this just gonna be another hunter/gatherer level grind destination, inevitably populated by Star Trek captains performing MMO dance moves?

As you said KO_Gilligan about having other friends with their own ships going with you exploring or doing mission together is something greatest thing we all would doit, that would make the game more interesting, think about it doing it alone sometimes might be alright but doing it together would make the mission interesting and communicating together and have strategy for games. I would go for this idea have this!
