I'd hate to be impatient, but ever since i saw a trailer over 6 months ago while searching for elite force games, I've been hooked on the idea. So i wanted to ask how much longer it's likely to take, hmm?

Also, the original idea was you start as an ensign and keep moving on up. is that still the same, or was that a rumour?

Welcome. Please note that this site has only been up since 7/28 and the trailer released by Cryptic was on 8/8. So I don't think you saw an STO trailer, as I was informed Perpetual Entertainment never released a trailer, so I'm not sure what it was you saw 6 months ago.

Perpetual did release a trailer six months ago, but it was a preview trailer, it contained no-ingame footage, only developer interviews and concept art.
It's still available on YouTube.

Christmas 2009 With The Closed Beta Opening Around Summer/Autumn 2009.
Thats what we at 1701 think for a realistic launch date!

:D Well....on an average it takes at least 3 years to develp, launch closed beta, open beta (maybe) and of course the release. So I would give it around 3 years to be completed and launched. If they do it less than that I would be very impressed...or nervous.

Please those of you who live in the US pick up a copy of the Game Informer articles there are several things in there that people seem to want to debate.
While we can argue that anything is subject to change, let us at least start with the assumption that information released through this site or articles/interviews is what the Devs intend.
